Sterlitamak

City and port in the Republic of Bashkortostan, west-central Russian Federation, situated on the River Belaya, 120 km/75 mi south of Ufa; population (1996 est) 261,000. It has chemical, engineering, and food-processing industries, and the Ishimbay oilfields are nearby. Sterlitamak was founded in 1766.
