Steubenville

City and administrative headquarters of Jefferson County, east Ohio, on the Ohio River, near the West Virginia border, 71 km/44 mi southwest of Pittsburgh; population (1996 est) 20,970. Industries include coal-mining, and the manufacture of iron, steel, paper products, pottery, and chemicals. Natural gas is found nearby. The city is the home of the College of Steubenville.

It occupies the site of Fort Steuben, which was built in 1786 to protect government land agents from the American Indians. In the Civil War, Steubenville was an important post of the Underground Railroad (a network for escaped slaves).
