Stevens, Bernard (1916–1983)

English composer. In 1948 he was appointed professor of composition at the Royal College of Music.

He studied at Cambridge with Edward J Dent and C B Rootham and at the Royal College of Music in London with R O Morris. He won the Leverhulme Scholarship and Parry Prize for composition. He served in the army 1940–46.

cantata The Harvest of Peace (1952) and other choral works; symphony Symphony of Liberation (1946) and Fugal Overture for orchestra, Ricercar and Sinfonietta for strings, overture East and West for wind band; violin concerto (1946), cello concerto (1952).

string quartet, piano trio, theme and variations for string quartet (1949), Fantasia for two violins and piano; violin and piano sonata; piano music; songs.
