Stevens, George (1904-1975)

US film director. He began as a director of photography and went on to make such films as Swing Time (1936) and Gunga Din (1939). His reputation grew steadily, as did the length and ambition of his films. He developed into one of the USA's leading classic filmmakers, winning Academy Awards for best director for A Place in the Sun (1951) and Giant (1956). Other classics include The Talk of the Town (1942) and Shane (1953).
