Stevenson, John

Stevenson, John (Andrew) (1761–1833)

Irish organist and composer. He learnt music as a chorister at Christ Church and St Patrick's Cathedrals at Dublin, and later became vicar choral at both. In 1814 he was appointed organist and music director at the Castle Chapel. He was knighted in 1803.

Stage works

operas The Contract (with Cogan, 1782) and Love in a Blaze (1799); music for O'Keeffe's farces The Son-in-Law, The Dead Alive (1781) and The Agreeable Surprise (1782), music for other stage pieces.

Vocal

oratorio Thanksgiving; services and anthems; glees, canzonets and duets; songs; accompaniments for Irish songs edited with words by Thomas Moore.
