Stewart, Alec James (1963– )

English cricketer. A right-handed batsman and wicketkeeper who played county cricket for Surrey, he made his Test debut in 1990. He was appointed England captain in succession to Mike Atherton in 1998 but was sacked in 1999 following England's poor performance in the 1999 cricket World Cup. By his retirement in 2003 he had scored the second-most Test runs for England.

An excellent timer of the ball and a fine player of fast bowling, he scored 477 runs in the Test series on the Caribbean tour in 1994, and at Bridgetown, Barbados in the 4th Test, became the first English cricketer to score a century in each innings against the West Indies. His father Mickey Stewart played for Surrey between 1954 and 1972, winning 8 England caps, and later becoming the England team manager. He was made an OBE in 2003.
