Stewart, Thomas (1926– )

US baritone. He sang La Roche while still a student in New York, and in 1957 appeared as Ashton opposite the Lucia of Callas, in Chicago. He soon moved to Europe, and was heard in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Gunther, Don Giovanni, and Golaud (from 1960–78). Between 1960 and 1972 he appeared at Bayreuth, as Wotan, Amfortas, and the Dutchman. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, as Ford (1966). From 1971 he sang in San Francisco. where in 1981 he was heard in the title role of Reimann's Lear; he made frequent performances with his wife, Evelyn Lear. Other roles included Onegin, Sachs, Luna, Iago, and Escamillo. He returned to the Metropolitan Opera House in 1995, as Balstrode.
