Stewart Island

Volcanic island divided from South Island, New Zealand, by the Foveaux Strait; area 1,750 sq km/676 sq mi; population (2006) 402. Its highest point is Mount Anglem, 975 m/3,200 ft. Industries include farming, fishing, oyster-catching, granite quarrying, and tourism. Oban is the main settlement.

The coast is deeply indented, and Paterson Inlet is a good harbour. The island is mountainous and thickly forested.
