Steyning

Town in West Sussex, southeast England, at the foot of the South Downs, 16 km/10 mi northwest of Brighton; population (2001) 6,050. It was once a seaport on the River Adur (which is now silted up). There are remains of a Benedictine cloister, a 12th-century church, and 17th-century school.
