stick insect

Insect of the order Phasmida, closely resembling a stick or twig. The eggs mimic plant seeds. Many species are wingless. The longest reach a length of 30 cm/1 ft.

Fossilized eggs were identified in 1995, and are thought to be around 44 million years old.

CHILDREN in Miss Marshall's class at Belmont Primary School in Guisborough have six stick insects for pets.
GIANT stick insects and beautiful butterflies were among the creepy crawlies which visited St Augustine's Primary School in Radford.
To improve their camouflage, stick insects have been observed to change colour to suit the plant they happen to be sitting on.
