Stillé, Alfred

Stillé, Alfred (1813-1900)

US doctor. He was a founder of the American Medical Association (1847) and he was also a prolific writer on his subject. His Elements of General Pathology (1848) was the first American text on pathology, and his Epidemic Meningitis or Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis (1867) was a pioneering work on this subject.

He was born in Philadelphia. After completing his medical studies in Europe, he practised in Philadelphia and taught at the Pennsylvania Medical College 1854-59 and the University of Pennsylvania 1864-83.
