Stillman, Whit

    0.17 sec.

Stillman, Whit (1952- )

US film director, writer, and producer. With his three feature films - Metropolitan (1990), Barcelona (1994), and The Last Days of Disco (1998) - Stillman established himself as a cerebral, literate film-maker. His films revolve around the group rather than the individual, and are essentially slices of conversation that reveal much about a given social group, usually the upper middle class.

A Harvard graduate, Stillman began his career as a journalist before settling in Spain, where he worked as a sales agent for Spanish film-makers Fernando Trueba and Fernando Colomo, occasionally acting in their films. Back in New York, he ran an illustrating agency while writing the screenplay and raising the funds for his first film, Metropolitan. Stillman has also worked in television, directing an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street.
