Stillwater

City and administrative headquarters of Washington County, southeastern Minnesota, on the St Croix River where it widens into Lake St Croix, 29 km/18 mi northeast of St Paul; population (1990) 13,900. Local industries include dairy processing and the manufacture of shoes, plastics, and ventilating fans. Tourism and yachting also contribute to the economy.

Founded as a logging camp in 1839, Stillwater was the first town in the state. It hosted the 1848 convention to organize the Minnesota Territory.

City and administrative headquarters of Payne County, north-central Oklahoma, 80 km/50 mi northeast of Oklahoma City and 101 km/61 mi west of Tulsa; population (1990) 36,700. It is surrounded by experimental farms, and trades and processes grain, cotton, livestock, poultry, and dairy goods. Among its products are electronic components, hoses, and data forms. There are oil and gas wells nearby. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame is here.

Founded a year after the city's settlement in 1889, Oklahoma State University has accounted for much of its growth.
