stipule

Outgrowth arising from the base of a leaf or leaf stalk in certain plants. Stipules usually occur in pairs or fused into a single semicircular structure.

They may have a leaflike appearance, as in rose plants Rosa; be spiny, as in black locust Robinia pseudoacacia; or look like small scales. In some species they are large and contribute significantly to the photosynthetic area, as in the garden pea Pisum sativum.
