Stirling, James (1791–1865)

Scottish naval officer and colonial administrator, the first governor of Western Australia 1828–39. Having explored the west coast of Australia in 1827, he persuaded the government to proclaim Western Australia a British colony (originally under the name of the Swan River Colony), and returned there with the first settlers in 1829.

Stirling, James (1692–1770)

Scottish mathematician and engineer, best known for his formula approximating n! and for the so-called Stirling numbers that occur in many combinatorial problems.

Stirling was born near Stirling in Scotland and travelled to Oxford in 1710 to begin studying there. In 1735 he returned to Scotland to live permanently (having previously lived for ten years in London, England, and also in Vienna, Austria, and Padua, Italy) and take up a post as manager of a mining company.
