Stirling, James (1791-1865)

Scottish naval officer and colonial administrator, the first governor of Western Australia 1828-39. Having explored the west coast of Australia in 1827, he persuaded the government to proclaim Western Australia a British colony (originally under the name of the Swan River Colony), and returned there with the first settlers in 1829.
