Stirling, James Frazer

    0.03 sec.

Stirling, James Frazer (1926–1992)

Scottish architect. He was possibly the most influential of his generation. While in partnership with James Gowan (1924– ), he designed an influential housing estate at Ham Common, Richmond (1958), and the Leicester University Engineering Building (1959–63) in a constructivist vein. He later adopted a more eclectic approach, exemplified in his considered masterpiece, the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, Germany (1977–83), which blended constructivism, modernism, and several strands of classicism. He also designed the Clore Gallery (1980–86) extension to the Tate Gallery, London. He was knighted in 1983.

His other work (either alone, or in partnership with others) includes the History Faculty building at Cambridge (1965–68); new buildings for Queen's College, Oxford (1968–70); student residential buildings for St Andrew's University (1964); and the Olivetti training headquarters (1969). The last of his designs completed in his lifetime was the B Braun Factory in Melsungen, Germany (1992).
