Stockton

City and river port in California, USA, on the San Joaquin River, 115 km/72 mi southeast of San Francisco; population (2000) 243,800. It is a trading and distribution centre for fruit, grain, and cattle from the rich farmlands of the San Joaquin Valley. Industries include food-processing, and the manufacture of wood products and agricultural machinery. Several military bases are sited nearby. Stockton was founded as Tuleburg in 1847 as a supply centre for the California gold rush, and renamed in 1850. A deep-water channel to San Francisco Bay was completed in 1933.

Facilities for higher education include the University of the Pacific.

The city was named after the military leader Robert F Stockton, who fought against Mexico in the battle over California, winning victory in 1847.
