Stone, William

Stone, William (1944– )

US baritone. He sang first in concert, making his opera debut in 1975 at Youngstown, as Germont. He sang Adam in the first performance of Penderecki's Paradise Lost at Chicago (1978), a role he repeated at La Scala, Milan (1979). He appeared at Florence in 1979 and 1981, as Berg's Wozzeck and Gluck's Orestes. He sang in the US first performance of Schoenberg's Von Heute auf Morgen (Santa Fe 1980), and as Mozart's Count at the New York City Opera in 1990. He sang the title role in Busoni's Faust, in 1992. Other roles include Marschner's Templar (Wexford, 1989), Rossini's Figaro, and Verdi's Posa.
