Stone Mountain

Massive monadnock (514 m/1,686 ft) situated 23 km/14 mi northeast of Atlanta, Georgia. It is the largest exposed granite dome in North America, and rises 198 m/650 ft above the surrounding Piedmont Plateau.

Its grey stone was once quarried for use in bridges, buildings, and roads. The Confederate Memorial Monument, with equestrian reliefs of Jefferson Davis, Robert E Lee, and Stonewall Jackson, designed by the US sculptor Gutzon Borglum, was carved (1917–67) into the mountain's northeastern wall.
