Stoney Creek

City in southern Ontario, Canada, at the west end of Lake Ontario, adjacent to Hamilton; population (1991) 50,000. It is a residential suburb with some light industry. The Women's Institutes, a worldwide organization, began here in 1897 in the Erland Lee Home, now a museum.

Settled by Loyalists in the 1780s, Stoney Creek served an agricultural region with mills and later with canneries and a winery. It is the site of a bloody battle fought on 6 June 1813, in which outnumbered British troops caused the retreat of invading US forces.
