Stonington

Town in southeastern Connecticut, on the Mystic and Pawcatuck rivers and Long Island Sound, on the Rhode Island border, 16 km/10 mi east of New London; population (1990) 16,900. In addition to fishing, tourist trade, and boatbuilding, it has some manufacturing, including the production of tools and fabrics.

Settled in 1649, it was an important early port and whaling centre. Stonington includes the villages of Mystic and Pawcatuck and the borough of Stonington (population (1990) 1,100).
