Stony Brook

Village in Brookhaven town, southeastern New York State, on Stony Brook Harbor and Smithtown Bay, 8 km/5 mi southwest of Port Jefferson; population (1990) 13,700. Settled by colonists from Boston in 1655, it is an educational and tourist centre for the northern shore of Long Island.

Parts of the village have been restored to their 18th-century appearance. The State University of New York at Stony Brook (1957) is located here.
