Stony Point

Town in southern New York State, on the west bank of the Hudson River, 8 km/5 mi southwest of Peekskill; population (1990) 12,800. It is largely residential.

History

It was the site of an American blockhouse that was taken by the British (31 May 1779) and made into a fort. This garrison was, in turn, successfully stormed by Patriot forces under Gen Anthony Wayne (15–16 July 1779), and soon abandoned.
