Stoughton

Town in eastern Massachusetts, in Norfolk County, along the Neponset River, 32 km/20 mi south of Boston and adjoining Brockton; population (1998 est) 26,800. Textile and shoe manufacture dates to the 1800s; the Reebok athletic footwear company is based here. Other industries produce rubber goods, plastics, and tools. As well as industry Stoughton is a residential community for Boston. It was incorporated in 1726.

Stoughton furnished powder and cannon, cast by the American revolutionary Paul Revere, to American Revolutionary forces.

The town has two entries on the National Register of Historic Places, a memorial and a station.

Stoughton

City in southern Wisconsin, on the Yahara River, 19 km/12 mi southeast of Madison; population (1990) 8,800. In a dairying and farming area, it produces dairy items, canned food, foundry items, car bodies, trailers, clothing, and electrical appliances.
