Strafford

Town in east-central Vermont, on the West Branch of the Ompompanoosuc River, 4 km/15 mi northwest of White River Junction; population (1990) 900, including Strafford and South Strafford villages. A World War II copper-mining community, it is the site of the Justin Smith Morrill Homestead.

Born here in 1810, Congressman and Senator Morrill gave his name to the 1862 Morrill Act, which led to the land-grant college system.
