Strand, Paul

Strand, Paul (1890–1976)

US photographer and film-maker. He studied with Lewis Hine and was encouraged by Alfred Stieglitz. After his early, near-abstract studies of New York, he turned to predominantly rural subjects which celebrate human dignity in a clear and straightforward manner. His portfolios, which include Photographs of Mexico 1940 and Time in New England, were always meticulously printed.
