Stratas, Teresa (1938– )

Canadian soprano. She studied in Toronto where she made her debut in 1958, as Mimi. From 1959 she appeared in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House, as Lisa, Nedda, Zerlina, and Cherubino. In 1962 she took part in the posthumous first performance of Falla's Atlántida. She sang Susanna at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and in Salzburg. In 1979 she sang the title role in the first complete performance of Berg's Lulu (Paris, under Boulez); she also created Marie Antoinette in Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles (the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, 1991). Other roles included Micaela, Giovanna d'Arco, Mélisande (Chicago, 1992), and Violetta.
