Strauss, Robert (Schwartz) (1918- )

US lawyer and government official. He served as Democratic Party chairman 1972-77, then was President Carter's Middle Eastern envoy in 1979 and campaign manager in 1980. Respected by Republicans, he served as ambassador to Russia 1991-92, to facilitate economic growth and encourage American investments.

He was born in Lockhart, Texas. After working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation 1941-45, he formed a profitable Dallas law firm.
