Strayer, Joseph Reese

Strayer, Joseph Reese (1904–1987)

US medievalist and educator. Known for his work on the origins of representative government and the beginning of modern administrative systems. he taught longest at Princeton University from 1929 onwards where he was named professor emeritus in 1973 and chaired the history department 1941–61.

He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. President of the Medieval Academy of America (1966–69), a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Scientists, he was the author of numerous books on the medieval period.
