Street, Jessie Mary Grey

    0.02 sec.

Street, Jessie Mary Grey (1889–1970)

Australian feminist, humanist, peace worker, reformer, and writer. She was involved in the suffragette movement in the UK and later helped to found the Family Planning Association of Australia, and was active in the campaign for equal pay for women. She initiated the movement that resulted in the 1967 referendum that granted citizenship to Australian Aborigines.

Street was born in central India. Her family migrated to Australia in 1896 and she was educated in England and at Sydney University. In 1928 she cofounded the United Association of Women (UAW), a largely middle-class body. In 1945 she successfully lobbied for the United Nations to adopt a charter of women's rights. She stood unsuccessfully for the federal parliament twice: in 1942 and 1949.

Street was married to Kenneth Whistler Street (1890–1970), who was lieutenant governor and chief justice of New South Wales. Laurence Lillingston Whistler Street (1926– ), also chief justice of New South Wales, is their son. Her activities were often at odds with the political outlook and social position of her family.
