Street-Porter, Janet (1944– )

English television producer and presenter. After hosting evening shows such as Saturday Night People (1978–80), she turned to production, her 1980s current affairs programme Network 7 winning a BAFTA award for originality. In 1988 she became the BBC's first commissioning editor for youth programmes, producing series such as Rough Guide to Europe and Rapido. From 1994 to 1995 she was managing director of the new national cable television channel, Live TV.

Her later appointments with the BBC included head of youth and entertainment 1991–94, when she made the series The Look (1992) and The Vampyr (1992), and head of independent production for BBC TV's entertainment group in 1994.

In 1999 she published As the Crow Flies, an account of her attempt to walk from Edinburgh Observatory to Greenwich Observatory as chronicled in the television series Coast to Coast.

Street-Porter was born in London. She studied architecture for a year, then worked as a journalist for various newspapers before moving to television.
