Streich, Rita

Streich, Rita (1920–1987)

German soprano. She studied first in Augsburg, and then with Maria Ivogün and Erna Berger in Berlin, and later with Domgraf-Fassbänder. She made her debut in 1943. From 1946 to 1950 she sang at the Berlin Staatsoper, and from 1950 at the Berlin Städtische Oper. In 1953 she joined the Vienna Staatsoper, and in 1954 made her debut in London. She made her US debut in 1957 at San Francisco, as Sophie. In 1958 she appeared at Glyndebourne, as Zerbinetta. She was best known for her singing of Mozart and Richard Strauss, and for coloratura roles such as the Queen of the Night, Constanze, and Olympia.
