Stresemann, Gustav (1878-1929)

German politician; chancellor in 1923 and foreign minister 1923-29 of the Weimar Republic. During World War I he was a strong nationalist but his views became more moderate under the Weimar Republic. His achievements included reducing the amount of war reparations paid by Germany after the Treaty of Versailles of 1919, negotiating the Locarno Treaties of 1925, and negotiating Germany's admission to the League of Nations. He shared the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1926 with Aristide Briand for their work for European reconciliation.
