stress fracture

In medicine, bone fracture caused by excessive amounts of exercise.

It is marked by the gradual onset of pain and swelling and a lump may develop over the affected site. Stress fractures cannot be detected by X-rays in the early stages. They are treated by rest, external support, and analgesics to control the pain.
