Stroheim, Erich von (1885–1957)

Austrian actor and director. He was known for his attention to detail and the realism of his films. In Hollywood from 1914, he was successful as an actor in villainous roles. His career as a director, which produced films such as Foolish Wives (1922) and Greed (1923), was ruined by extravagance and the demand for complete artistic license. He returned to acting in such films as La grande Illusion (1937) and Sunset Boulevard (1950).
