Stronsay

One of the Orkney Islands group, Scotland, 20 km/12 mi northeast of Kirkwall; population (2001) 343. Its terrain extends over an area 10 km/6 mi long and up to 8 km/5 mi wide. Agriculture is the main occupation of the islanders, and Whitehall the largest settlement.

The island was developed in the 18th century because of the kelp industry. Further developments in the 19th century were driven by the herring industry, especially curing.
