Stubbs, William (1825–1901)

British historian and churchman. In 1866 he became regius professor of modern history at Oxford University. His chief publication, Constitutional History of England (1873–78), is a work of monumental scholarship. His Select Charters and Other Illustrations of English Constitutional History from the Earliest Times to the Reign of Edward I (1870), has been published in many editions. Stubbs's work gave a new direction to the study of medieval English history and continues to have considerable influence, particularly in the teaching of history at Oxford.

Stubbs was born in Knaresborough, England. He was educated at Ripon Grammar School and Christ Church, Oxford University. In 1884 he was consecrated bishop of Chester, and three years later translated to the see of Oxford.
