Stucken, Frank van der

Stucken, Frank (Valentin) van der (1858–1929)

US conductor and composer. He studied in Europe with Benoît, Reinecke, Grieg, and others. In 1884–95 he conducted a male-voice choir in New York, where he also conducted orchestral concerts. In 1895–1903 he was director of the Cincinnati College of Music, where 1895 to 1907 he conducted the Symphony Orchestra, giving the US first performance of Mahler's fifth symphony on 24 March 1905; this was only the second performance of a Mahler symphony anywhere in America. After 1908 he lived much in Europe.
