Studer, Cheryl (1955– )

US soprano. She studied with Hans Hotter in Vienna, and from 1980 appeared at the Staatsoper in Munich, as Daphne, Sieglinde, the Empress, and Euryanthe. She made her US debut at Chicago in 1984, as Micaela. From 1990 she appeared in New York at the Metropolitan Opera House, as Mozart's Donna Anna and Electra. She sang at the Bayreuth Festival in 1984 and 1985, as Eva and Elisabeth. In 1988 she was Chrysothemis at Salzburg, where she returned as the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman without a Shadow, in 1992. A versatile artist, she has also given strongly characterized performances of Rossini's Mathilde (at La Scala, Milan, 1988) and Aïda (at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1994).
