Sturdee, Frederick Charles Doveton (1859–1925)

British admiral. He became chief of the war staff 1914 and was sent by Lord Fisher to find the German admiral von Spee after the British defeat at Coronel, which he did at the Battle of the Falkland Islands 8 December 1914. He commanded the fourth battle squadron at the Battle of Jutland 1916 and was promoted to full admiral 1917, then Admiral of the Fleet 1921. KCB 1913, 1st baronet 1916.

He was commander-in-chief of the important naval base at the Nore on the Thames Estuary 1918–21. In 1916 and received a grant of £10,000 for his war services.
