Sturgis

City in southern Michigan, 68 km/42 mi east of Niles and 3 km/2 mi north of the Indiana border; population (1990) 10,100. A resort founded in 1827, it manufactures furniture and other products. There are several Amish communities nearby.

Sturgis

City and administrative headquarters of Meade County, western South Dakota, 32 km/20 mi northwest of Rapid City; population (1990) 5,300. It is a trade centre for a mining and farming area and has some light industry. It hosts a motorcyclists' gathering, a steam and gas threshing bee, and a balloon rally each year.

It was founded in the 1870s as a gold rush town. Numerous frontier buildings are preserved. Nearby are Bear Butte State Park, the Black Hills National Cemetery, and Old Fort Meade Museum on the grounds of the 1878 cavalry post.
