Sturzo, Luigi

Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Sturzo, Luigi (1871–1959)

Italian Catholic political leader and leading opponent of Fascism. Ordained as a priest in 1894, he opposed the church's prohibition on Catholics' participation in Italian electoral politics. He founded the Partito Popolare Italiano/Italian Popular Party (PPI) in 1919 as a mass movement of Catholics devoted to secular reform. Unlike some members of his party Sturzo opposed collaboration with Fascism, and was declared an enemy of the state in 1923, being forced into exile until 1946. He became a senator in 1952.

Sturzo's exile was spent in London from 1924 to 1940, and in New York between 1940 and 1946.
