Subotnick, Morton (1933– )

US composer. His works often employ synthesizers. In 1969 he was appointed director of electronic music at the California Institute of Arts, Los Angeles.

He studied at Mills College, California, with Darius Milhaud. He is married to Joan La Barbara.

Works

Electronic music

Concert for wind quintet and electronics, Angels for string quartet and electronics (first performance 1984), The Key to Songs for chamber orchestra and synthesizer (1985), All my Hummingbirds have Alibis for flute, cello, midi piano, mallets, and computer (1991).

Orchestral

Music for 12 Elevators, Silver Apples of the Moon (1967), Before the Butterfly for orchestra (1975); music drama The Double Life of Amphibians; In Two Worlds saxophone concerto (1988), And the Butterflies Began to Sing (1988); incidental music for plays by Brecht and Beckett.
