Anzhero-Sudzhensk

Town in the Kemerovo oblast (region) of the Russian Federation, in southern Siberia, 80 km/50 mi east of Tomsk, situated on the Trans-Siberian Railway; population (2001 est) 94,200. It is a major centre of coal mining in the Kuznetsk Basin; mining equipment, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals are manufactured here.

Anzhero-Sudzhensk was founded in 1897 to supply coal to the newly built railway and became a town in 1931.
