Suffolk County

County in eastern Massachusetts; area 148 sq km/57 sq mi; population (2000 est) 689,800. Its capital is Boston; other urban centres are Chelsea, Revere, and Winthrop. Among the Massachusetts counties, only Nantucket is smaller in area.

Suffolk County

County in southeastern New York State, at the eastern end of Long Island; area 2,359 sq km/911 sq mi; population (1990 est) 1,321,900. Its capital is Riverhead. In the west it is typically suburban, with commercial development; further east there is some agriculture, and on the North Fork there is a thriving wine industry. The South Fork is a well-developed, affluent resort area.
