Sugar Land

City in southeastern Texas, 29 km/18 mi southwest of central Houston, near the Brazos River; population (1990) 24,500. It developed around sugar cane fields from about 1824, and still refines imported cane. Its economy also depends on oil, chemicals, figs, and food processing, and there is a state prison.
