Sohag

Governorate in eastern Egypt, in the Nile valley; area 1,547 sq km/597 sq mi; population (1995 est) 3,067,000. The capital is Sohag. The governorate (formerly called Girga) is one of the most densely populated in Egypt. The ancient ruins of Athribis are in the southwest.

Sohag

Capital of Sohag governorate, eastern Egypt; population (1992 est) 156,000. Sohag is a port on the west bank of the River Nile, situated between Asyut and Jirja, at the southern end of the Turat as-Sawhajuyeh Canal. The city is an important trading centre for the region, and its main industry is cotton ginning.

Sohag was a centre of Coptic learning in medieval times, and the ruins of a 5th-century Coptic church can still be seen.
