Zion

Jebusite (Amorites of Canaan) stronghold in Jerusalem captured by King David, and the hill on which he built the Temple, symbol of Jerusalem and of Jewish national life.

Zion

Town in Lake County, northeast Illinois; population (1990) 19,800. It is situated on Lake Michigan, 72 km/45 mi north of Chicago and 5 km/3 mi south of the state border with Wisconsin. Mainly a residential community, it has some industrial development, most notably a nuclear power plant (1973).

The town was founded in 1901 by the Scottish religious leader John Alexander Dowie, who made it the headquarters of his Christian Catholic Church in Zion sect (founded in 1896).

Illinois State Beach Park is along Lake Michigan.
