Suitner, Otmar (1922- )

Austrian conductor. He studied with Clemens Krauss. In 1960 he became chief conductor of the Dresden Staatsoper and Staatskapelle. In 1964 he was music director of the Deutsche Staatsoper, Berlin, where he gave the first performances of Dessau's Puntila (1966) and Einstein (1974), and Leonce und Lena (1979). He conducted at the San Francisco Opera from 1969. He appeared at Bayreuth, with Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser, and the Ring (1964-69). He led Der Freischütz at Munich, in 1990.
